Inherited Traits and Learned Behaviors

Inherited Traits and Learned Behaviors

TEKS: 5.10B
Differentiate between inherited traits of plants and animals such as spines on a  cactus or shape of a beak and learned behaviors such as an animal learning tricks  or a child riding a bicycle.

Inherited Traits
Traits are your physical characteristics, like your hair or eye color. Every living thing has traits that make it unique. Most traits are passed down from parents, however, they can also come from your grandparents or even your great-grandparents. Some traits are also influenced by the environment.
Known as: Instincts (Innate Behaviors)

Examples:
  • Eye Color
  • Skin Color
  • Height
  • Freckles
  • Dimples
  • Finger and Toe length
  • Curly or Straight Hair

Learned (Acquired) Behaviors
Learned behaviors are just as it says on the tin: behaviors that are learned rather than innate, such as a dog being taught to roll over. These behaviors are born from experience, coming from conditioning through rewards and punishments.

In general, a learned behavior is one that an organism develops as a result of experience. Learned behaviors contrast with innate behaviors, which are genetically hardwired and can be performed without any prior experience or training.

Examples:

  • Playing a sport or an instrument
  • Driving a car
  • Training an animal to do tricks
  • Learning to ride a bike
  • Speaking a different language
  • Learning to read and write
